The Magdalena River

Named after the biblical figure Mary Magdalene, the river flows almost one thousand miles from Colombian Macizo high in the Andes to the port of Barranquilla on the Caribbean.

Once Colombia's major highway to the country's interior, now few navigate its waters as cargo and passenger traffic has transfered to the roads.

The images here were taken on a ten day trip down the river with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) from Barrancabermeja to Mompox and Magangue, and then down the Canal del Dique to Cartagena.

TNC is the only international conservation organisation working in the Magdalena River basin, where it works alongside Colombia's Ministry of Environment and the river's environmental authority, Cormagdalena.
